The Land Rover Range Rover (official name) is so much money, as opposed to comparable luxury vehicles like the Lincoln Navigator, Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz ML-Class, and BMW X5 for a few reasons.

First of all, it's built in the United Kingdom, then shipped to the United States, which instantly means several price increases due to heavy taxing in Europe, plus importation fees. The two German luxury SUVs (BMW and Mercedes-Benz) are both built in the United States to avoid these fees. The only other competitor which suffers this disadvantage is the Lexus LX 470 which is built in Japan and, since the distance from Japan to the United States is much farther than from the United Kingdom, costs much more to ship to the United States.

Second of all, the Range Rover, like all Land Rover models, is equipped with the best 4-Wheel Drive system money can buy. The BMW, Cadillac, and Mercedes-Benz all have All-Wheel Drive, which isn't nearly as good. The only comparable vehicles, both on- and off-road are the Lexus LX 470 (which is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser) and, oddly enough, the Lincoln Navigator, which both feature true 4-Wheel Drive systems with Lo-Range and optional limited-slip or locking differentials. The Mercedes-Benz GL 450 also has the locking differential option, but only at the center (it relies much more heavily on electronic traction control).

Lastly, it's impossible to rule out that since Land Rover is owned by Ford Motor Company, which also owns Lincoln, that the Range Rover model is priced higher to avoid direct competition with the Lincoln Navigator. This puts the Navigator directly between the Land Rover Range Rover and Land Rover LR3 in price to avoid any internal squabbling. Porsche is doing similar experiments by placing its new Cayman model between the 911 and Boxster in price, performance, and interior amenities. This way, similar models in the same company don't compete with each other and steal sales from each other, but rather from the true competitors.

I hope this has answered your question. If you have any more, please feel free to ask.

They are so much money because of the name. Contrary to what so many believe, they are NOT equipped with far superior off-road suspension and traction systems. If by superior, you mean unreliable and horribly expensive to repair, yes. I can't speak for the Rovers since Ford has been making them, but up to 2004, when BMW owned them, they were basically dumbed down BMW X5's. They were same engine, same chassis, same suspension except the addition of the very troublesome front air suspension. But kicker is the Range Rover was given the BMW's leftover obsolete navigation system from previous generations of BMW's. Were they worth the money? Only if you wanted the name. They didn't even come with automatic headlights and climate control was only semi-automatic.
