Unexplained deaths of cattle, small animal, and goats.
My grandfather said dogs usually did this and to kill a dog if you see one sucking its water instead of lapping it up. He and other rancher told me they had been known to attack people and had to be killed. Coyote and foxes also sucked blood from their kills. Has anyone else heard of this phenomenon.

I am not sure if this will help you, but for the people who say that dogs cant suck, but must lap their water, they are wrong. i used to have a perfectly healthy poodle with no genetic or physical defects (in her mouth) but she ALWAYS sucked her water. she WAS able to lap it i.e. there was nothing wrong with her tongue, but she chose to suck it. it was just something she picked up quite early on in life.

i have a friend with a cattle dog who only grew up around horses, no other dogs, and he sucked his water also. this (i think) was because he had such a close bond with the horses and was mearly mimiking them in the way they drank.

it is possible that the bodies of the cattle were over exposed to heat, therefore developing bloat or letting the blood turn acidic and dry.

Saying a dog cant suck water is a myth. its like saying a human cant learn the african click language because our mouths arent equiped to make those noises. it is a matter of adaptation.

your grandfather may be mistaken in saying to shoot any dog seen sucking water, as this does happen and does not necessarily pose any threat (such as my poodle & friends cattle dog). in saying this, it is unusual for a dog to actually suck blood... but there also may be reasons for this such as a drought. with the lack of water dogs may be searching for any liquid to put in them. i have heard of this before, though i still think it is very strange due to their keen sense of smell- they would know it was blood.

i hope i was able to help, even a little!!

Yeah, there was a big deal about cattle mutilation a while back. Turns out it's nothing paranormal, and the dogs may have come to look at the bodies *causing the tracks* They didn't drain the blood, prolly didn't even kill it. Turns out it's a natural part od decomposition. The body will bloat and burst, opening it to flies laying their egs inside, who will then feed on the soft tissue and body fluids. I think it only takes a matter of 48 hours for this to happen.

Short answer, no. You don't have vampiric dogs about. You've just got crazy *old?* men telling way outdated tales. Bit of entertainment value, though.

The phenomenon has been held accountable to "El-chupecabra" in certain places. No, I have no idea if I spelled that right.

ok, first off, dogs, of any kind, cannot suck water, their mouths are not designed for it. They drink by creating a cup with the tip of their tounge and lapping up water. Second, I have never in all my years of dog knowledge ever saw or heard of any such thing. Perhaps they have them confused with the Chubicabra, which is a "mystery" animal in Mexico that is said to have done such things.

But to answer your question, no, it's not possable and no I've never heard of it

I think this is where the story of the Chupacabra comes from.
