Hi!
I want to trade in my 1988 Diahatsu Charade hatchback for a new car. The charade is in fine condition, has cd player, new muffler and is really economical.
The dealer only offered me $1000 Australian for the trade in.
What should I do? I bought the car 2 years ago for $1350, and I added the cd player after that.

That's probably about right for an 1988 Charade as a trade in. The dealer will tidy up the Charade and put it on the market for $2999. It's just how things are. They sell cars to make money. If you have time you should get more than $1000 selling it privately.

That doesn't sound like a bad deal at all, especially considering that the offer is coming from a dealership.

Visit this site and enter the information for your car to obtain a price: http://www.kbb.com

Just use five random numbers for a zip-code, since it's for the United States. Once you have your price, divide it by .78 to get the Australian equivalent.

I entered your car using the default settings, plus the CD player, and came back with a dealer trade-in value of $600 American, which comes to about $770 Australian. This means the dealership is offering you about $230 more than the car's estimated value.

Keep in mind that the more you use a car, the less it's worth. Don't ever expect to sell a car for what you paid for it. Losing $350 over two years is very good compared with nearly every other situation.

I hope this has answered your question. If you have any more, please feel free to ask.

Never do Trade-in's They come up with some b s about negative equity that you have to pay off. If i were you, i would get the new car on its own and sell the Charade to a private party.

If you go to www.kbb.com, they'll give you a quote for what your car is worth according to the Kelley Blue Book, which is what most dealerships go by, at least here in the states. The website notes that the prices are U.S.-based only, but it gives you a general idea. Good luck!

That's a lot. You'd be lucky to get $100 in the US.
