Can a church sponsor an employee for a green card?

I believe they can, IF they work for the church in question. They cannot sponsor just a church member, I don't believe. Check on the site:

yes a church can sponsor a person as an employee to get a gree card but i takes a long time am not sure how long though consult a lawyer or go to the uscis web page and check

not just for a visa visitor maybe if is a big shot church here in the States
