Your local volunteer center can connect you with the volunteer projects that match your interests and meet real community needs. I volunteer through one of the Hands On Network affiliates, and they have a great array of diverse volunteer activities for everyone:

In New York, depending upon where in New York you are, your affiliates are:

New York Cares

Hands On Greater Buffalo/West Seneca Youth Bureau:

Rochester Cares

Here's a list of other Volunteer Centers:

And, the United Way is also a great resource for connecting you with volunteer projects that match your interests:

The great thing about working through your volunteer centers is the fact that they typically have one-time, short-term, and long-term opportunities, and there is a variety of different things that match your interests.

Good luck!
