Tithing in Christianity is giving 10 percent of your earnings to the Church. I remember as a kid my parents used to give a few dollars every week as the collection plate passed. I used to think along the lines of the now cliche line: "If money is the root of all evil, why do churches want it so badly?"
Now I see all the good my church does with the money. It is not as though the priest is making a lot or there is a lot of excess.
I am only up to about 5 percent now. And I need to develop my budgeting skills a little further so I can get to 10 percent. Saying that though makes me think I should just trust God and dive in.
But think about it: 10 percent isn't very much to ask for a worthy cause!

Yes, as a christian of the LDS faith, I pay 10% of all my earnings, and even a fast offering if money allows. The Bible says to pay a tithe, so I do. I figure it is a very small percentage compared to the sacrafice the Lord made for us, ya know?

Yes.
Malachi 3:8-12
8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, 'How have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings.
9 "You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you!
10 "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.
11 "Then I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of the ground; nor will your vine in the field cast its grapes," says the LORD of hosts.
12 "All the nations will call you blessed, for you shall be a delightful land," says the LORD of hosts.

For hose who think this is not a New Testament teaching, listen to what Jesus said in Luke 11:42
"But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet disregard justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others."

For most of my life, yes, I have tithed, and I saw many blessings as a result of it. However, I have faced difficulty in tithing ever since I married a non-Christian, because whatever money I earn I believe is "our" money and she does not believe I should be giving her money to something she doesn't believe. I am trying to work out with myself and God how I should manage to be obedient (honor God) and respectful to my wife. Tough.

Yes my wife and I do.
When we sat down and figured it out, we found out that we were actually giving about 12%. But we have never lacked for anything. God is Good.
Malachi chapter 3 (just as Tim pointed out) is one of the very few times that we are told to test God. Test Him and see if he will not poor out blessings on us when we honor Him with our tithes and offerings.
If we cannot honor God with the little that He has given to us, we should never expect Him to bless us with more. You will never have enough to "feel" like you are ready to tithe. It is about obedience and choosing to tithe.

Why do you ask? Do you know the NT Principle of the Tithe? The OT included up to 40% or one's income! Did you know that?

(1Cor 16:2) Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, = = as God hath prospered him,= = that there be no gatherings when I come.

Thanks, RR

Yes. But, I confess there have been times I did not have faith in Him and kept the money back to pay bills. I strive to not do that again nor do I merely give 10%, but that is the starting block.

I also try to give of my time and the abilities he has giving me as well as tithe some of my time to devotion and prayer (really weak on that one)

Yes, I tithe every time I get paid. I don't know why anyone wouldn't. If you're really a Christian, why wouldn't you want to obey God and His Word? After all, He did die for you!
