A criminal investigator investigates a crime that has taken place within the jurisdiction of a particular police department.

The posting will list the qualifications, and they would be looking for an education associate's degree or bachelors degree in criminal justice or a combination of an associates degree, and some experience on the police force, XX amount of years to compensate for the missing degree hours.

If it's for a detective agency they may be easier going, but they will be looking for a background in some type of investigation with another agency or a criminal justice degree.

What you need to know is fingerprinting, interviewing, criminal law, constitutional rights and how they affect each citizen, (if they need someone w/in police dept) and it's for forensics, a degree in chemistry, plus time on the force...and already working with another agency, criminal and juvinille justice, analysis of terrorism, evidence and criminal procedure, possibly police field studies, the police function, at least the intro to security, crime causation, lab techniques.

These are just some of the classes I took just for a 73 credit AA and Cert, but that would have only gotten me into the Academy. You also need to know federal law, as well.
