Which scripture says that one would burn in hell for eternity.
I remember reading Heaven is eternal, but sin is death, and those who follow satan will be put to 2nd death.

Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

I honestly don't see God as needing the kind of sick, twisted revenge that needs to see human beings tortured in a burning pit forever.
In Revelation, I read that death AND hell are scheduled to be tossed into the Lake of Fire...it would seem a bit difficult to toss hell INTO hell, I would think.
No, I think the "Lake of Fire" is like an incinerator, where God will toss the trash that makes His children suffer...death, disease, war, hatred, greed, poverty, etc, etc...
I know that the wages of sin is death, which Jesus paid, by tasting death once for all men. If the wages of sin were to be tortured forever, Jesus would still be twisting in the flames, otherwise, He has not paid the full debt.
The GIFT of God is everlasting life...one does not have an everlasting life, mankind gave up his immortality when he sinned...everlasting life is now a GIFT.
That's the way I see it. Of course, in the end, it isn't going to matter what any of us believe about it...God's gonna do it His way, anyhow. So far as I know, He hasn't asked any of us for our advice or opinions...which is probably just as well...

Carol M has answered this question well, she stated the passage in the Book of Revelations to answer the question about the second death, the Lake of Fire. I wish only to say that Jesus promised that to true believers in Him, those who live in true communion with Him in grace, death has no power over them. And even if they should die, they will live forever. He said: "I am the vine and you are the branches. Those who remain in me shall have eternal life." In this way He was indicating the mystical body of Christ and the City of God in the same way, the mystical grace "network" or gateway of souls. "I Am the Gate," and he said, "I know my sheep and my sheep know me, they know and heed my voice." You may not hear His voice with your ears, but your soul does. In another passage in the Book of Revelations, it says that at the Battle of Armageddon, satan and his followers, will be burnt up, by one Word. Learn to pray the Our Father, the prayer that Jesus recommended. If you try to serve God, keeping His commands, and praying He can bring His life to you. It is also written that Fear of God is the beginning of Wisdom. But Love of God is the fullfillment of Wisdom. Do both to secure your salvation. The Father said that He would never make any trial too much for us to bear, but that He would also give to us an escape.
"Be Not Afraid," was the motto of Pope John Paul II. "Fear Not," the angel said to Mary, "for you have found favor with God." Thus we also pray to Mary: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of death. Amen For this reason the rosary is prayed as a testament to the vine and the mysteries of Christ. Just as Mary said to the wine steward when Jesus worked his first miracle: Do everything that He tells you to do.

Prayer is the communication protocol of heaven. I have tried to show this in the most practical way that I can. Vocal prayer from the text is the beginning of understanding the means to Him. Don't be afraid to do as the people did in the days when He was present on earth and say: Lord teach me how to pray. From this prayer you find the "peace" that only Christ can give.

Mat 18:8 If your hand or your foot causes you to sin cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.

Whenever the Bible talks about eternal torment, it is symbolic for everlasting destuction with no hope for a resurrection. (Second Death)
Christendom's hellfire doctrine goes against God's sense of justice and love. Why is that? Because it is a false doctrine .What does the Bible teach about hell? It teaches us that all people both good and bad go there. It is mankinds common grave. Even Jesus himself was buried in hell and was there for three days until God resurrected his Son back to life. What Scriptures prove that hell is where the dead are buried? Here are but a few:
Psalm 139:8--"If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there."
Amos 9:2--"Though they dig into hell, From there My hand shall take them; Though they climb up to heaven, From there I will bring them down."
Jonah 2:2--"And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice."
Revelation 1:18--"I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death."
Psalms 146:3,4--"Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish." [ The dead cannot feel anything, neither pain nor pleasure for they have no thoughts ]
Ecclesiastes 3:19-20--"For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again." [ So what happens to both people and animals when they die? They all go to the same place.]
Revelation 20:13-14--"And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death." (Hell delivers up the dead, meaning a resurrection from the grave, and what happens to death & hell? They are thrown into the lake of fire, meaning total destruction.
Satan and his demons want people to think that God is cruel and sadistic, and the false docrtine of hellfire does just that. God is love and tortures no one. I hope this information helps.

let's not forget this passage in Isaiah
Isaiah 33:14
The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?
