I am asking if dog behaviorists know whether dog mothers teach her puppies things like many other animal moms. For example, do they learn from the Mom how to socialize with other dogs and not to soil the den? If the mother is well-trained, does the puppy learn that training and become easier to train later? How long should puppies stay with the mother?

Some of what you are asking the answer is yes. Like does the mother teach them, not in what humans want but, in what dogs need to know...........weaning, play stuff like that. My pups have certainly learned from the dams where the food dish is and how to get out of the doggie door. If left with the mother the pup can pick different things up from her. But, true training must come from you. You certainly cant expect a dog to train the pups. Others behaviors are instinctual. I hope this helps because it is really hard to put into words.

Puppies learn a lot from their Mother. Socializing is big, but also the love and care a Mother gives can not be replaced by a human. If you want a happy, loving puppy, leave it with the Mother for at least 8 weeks. 10 to 12 weeks is even better.

Most breeders let their pups go at 8-weeks-old. This is the BEST time. 6 weeks is way too early, and 7 weeks is debatable....

The puppy "Canine Socialization" period is from 5-7 weeks of age. So this is a critical time to be with their mother & littermates to learn doggy social skills, how to interact, how to play, learning about manners and dominance.

The "Human Socialization" period is from 7-9 weeks old. That is why it is best to place them with their new family at this time. This is the best time for them to bond with their new family.

From 9-12 weeks old is the "Fear Impact" period. It is best not to stress the pup too much during this period and changing into a new home or situation could possibly be a bad idea during this period of time. Traumatic things can leave a big impact on a pup during this period.

So, it is best for them to stay with mom & littermates until 8 weeks old. Then it is time to go to the new family!!! :o)

Good luck.

Yes, they learn a lot of things from their moms. They learn how to behave, how to read "dog language", etc. It is very important for puppies to stay with theri moms until they are at least 8 weeks old becasue of the mom/pup learning.

Not really,,, Puppy's need to start the weaning process @ 4 weeks, and the litter should be separated from their mother @ 5 weeks. The puppy's should be kept together as a litter at least until 7 weeks but not longer than 10 weeks.

WOW, this is a sore subject in this forum - there will be much debate. Several people will say absolutely a mother dog teaches all the things you listed and more such as the chain of dominance. Alot of people, particularly breeders, will say that the pup shouldn't be taken away from their mother until they are at least 10 weeks old, preferrably 12 weeks.

On the other hand, there are several people that adopt pups everyday and consider 6 weeks to be normal. I have always adopted my pups at 6 weeks like the rest of the world has. I'm not up on AKC's suggestion because I'm not a breeder, or care to be. Although this is the part that several will argue with and get ticked off at, I have to sya that all my dogs have always been fine, well adjusted animals that respect me and others they come in contact with, and are well house trained.

The puppies should stay with mom for at least 12 weeks. They do learn different things from their mom, in this period, and tend to be happier, have better temperaments, and are healthier puppies

most people sell at 8 weeks I like 10-12 weeks myself
it also makes picking out your puppy eaiser because you can watch them with the pack and know thier temperment
