I have added a few links for you to maybe get ideas. Btw..... farmhouse sinks are REALLY popular right now! Unless it's a whitewashed wood, a white laminate would be inappropriate for a country style kitchen. A natural oak, barnwood or other similarly rough looking wood would look nice. With a lot of natural lighting and well-placed artificial lighting, light, bright colors such as yellow and/baby blue will brighten up the space. Also, a reflective metal such as copper would be beautiful! Oh, and just as an fyi... Lowe's does have that service. So does Home Depot, but the thing with these designers is that they are beginner designers and they are only given 52 hours from the minute you walk in the door to the last second the chrome is shined on your refrigerator to get the design done. That translates to 4+ days, which as a designer, is not nearly enough time to properly draw the plans, choose the materials, arrange for workers, delivery and installation, especially for a kitchen, which is the most difficult room in a house, and hope nothing goes wrong along the way. The designer is not allowed to give you the best design he or she could. They are less expensive, so, it depends on what you're looking for.

There are a lot of myths out there about color. Wood is always freindly and comfortable in any space.

One of the other HUGE myths is that if you have a small room it has to have light colors. I did my tiny kitchen in darker cabinets with a medium green walls, with a marbled effect, and mirrored the marbled pattern in my laminate countertops with the bianco marble pattern from Pionite. I use light colors on the floor and white on the ceiling. I do have a high ceilin so I filled the tops of the cabinets with my collections.

It looks comfortable and cozy and stylish. I don't think about "closed in" at all.

Check out some ideas at American Woodmark .com or Kraftmaid .com or Woodmode.com, they will encourage you to use the color and style you like, with the help of a professional.

I depends on your room?

if its small and tiny, then wood will look silly, it will make the space look enclosed, and awful. white on the other hand will make the kitchen look bigger, but it is harder to keep clean, unless it has been treated to a gloss finish. gloss wood looks great with a bright dark worktop.

if you have a smaller room, then stick to a light coloured wood, like pine or limed ash/oak. Oak looks cool against a worktop with anything with a blue tint in it. Ash and oak work well with a pink tint. Edge the worktop, with wood to tie in the kitchen, or use a sod worktop to give it a clean look.

Medium sized kitchens will be able to take the oak fnishes, even a cherry red, which look good agnst green worktops. Finally if you have a big space, go for the all out dark brown and mahogony, heavily polished.

To make a dark unit work in a small space you have to introduce light and reflection, which is stainless steel and very light worktops - but this contemporary look is silly with wooden kitchens.

I used to build and design kitchens.

I just had my whole kitchen redone about a year ago. We had a design consultation at Lowe's and got to pick out every last detail. I recommend going there and having someone help you design it on the computer. They have tons of books on things you can get and examples you can see.

How about a farmhouse, Rooster , etc focal point in your kitchen --- a tumbled marble tile mural kitchen backsplash. Lots of ideas on the customer testimonial page.

Thanks, Alicia

I've just designed my own from Ikea. You can download the planner, add your room dimensions and start adding units and appliances. You can see it in 3d, change it, cost it and print a shopping list! I highly recommend it!

i got a professional compant in to do mine, they took measurements and came up with some ideas - then i told them how i thought it should be so they redesigned it to my specifications. Any reputable compay will do that for you. but they are not cheap. but you can get them to plan it for you and then fit it yourself. much cheaper. if you can fit kitchens.

good luck.
