Which is the best small dog for apartment living, as well as being okay while I'm at work until noon M-F. I'm trying to decide which breed to get. I love them all, but of course, each one has its ups and downs.

Papillon, Yorkie, Japanese Chin

Have you considered a Lhasa, a shih-tzu (one of the most popular dogs in america) or a Pomeranian?

Sorry meant to limit your choices not expand. One thing to consider is the volume of the bark. Papillons tend to have high pitched barks. I really am not a fan of the Japanese Chin but of the 3 you mentioned, I like the Yorkie the best.

Hope these sites work for you. Most importantly, I'd get a grown up dog and not a puppy since you are going to be at work and won't have time to housetrain it properly. But those sites have great articles about specifics of the breed and temperment. All are low energy dogs. Make sure you pick one that suits your energy. The most energetic one of the litter may not be as low energy and you have to walk him a couple times.

I also think that all dog breeds rock, but here are a few dogs that I would pick.

My brother lives in an apartment and he has a boggle. There small-medium and are adorable. They don`t take a lot of care ,but love to play if you are ready.Boggles are a Boston terrier, beagle mix and would be my choice. You may also like a dachshund or a basset hound because they are both playful, but not to playful. But out of those three u said above i would pick a yorkie. And don`t pick a jack russell because i had one and they go crazy and they are to hyper actvie to be alone for a long time(even for a short time).

Well, I can tell you it's definitely NOT a Jack Russell Terrier. They are balls of energy and I couldn't imagine keeping one in an apartment. I've owned a Yorkie and she was a nice little dog. I currently have a Toy Poodle and a Chihuahua and they are both great. Depending whether or not you want to deal with alot of grooming, poodles are very smart, easy to train, and don't shed. Our Chihuahua has no grooming needs, she's very loyal, and an excellent watch dog. Good luck with your decision!

All of the above and Bichons too. All dogs require regular outside excersize but most small dogs are absolutely content inside during the day, as long as you have provided for their relief. A wee wee mat in the laundry room or a bathroom works quite well and they will use it every time once they know about it and one is there every day.

Remember, small dogs, the size youare talking, have bladders about the size of your thumb and can't hold it like big dogs.

A yorkie would be good. Definitly indoor dogs, usually well behaved.

Someone posted to get a jack russell.

DO NOT!

They are waaay too smart and active to be left alone in an apartment.

Papillons are so cute. A small dog would probably be best. I personally like daschunds and pomeranians the best. We own two poms and they are great inside dogs, they are sassy sometimes though. the chihuahua is also a good I dey.

My cousin owns a yorkie that is a great inside dog, they leave their puppy in a secure area like a hallway or bathroom when they leave, they are also very unhappy about cold weather and will shiver so they would love to be inside.

There is a very good book out that helps you figure it out. It lets you know the personality of the dog and if the dog would get along with your personality. The book is called, "Right Dog for You", by Daniel Tortora. There may be one at the library. Mmm

i saw an ad in the paper the other day that said "Best house dog in the world according to the AKC, Schipperke puppies"
I don't know if the AKC really agrees with that, but I do. I have a schipperke, and she is a great dog. they don't care if they live in an apartment, or a house with tons of yard. they are happy, loyal, and cute as a bug. she comes to work with me every Wednesday, because she is also a therapy dog, and all of the patients love her to death as well. they know her name, but have no idea what mine is. she'll sit all day as long as she is being pet. if they quit petting her, she goes and finds someone else to pet her. she puts smiles on all of the patients faces just by being her.
