Despite people saying we are saved by grace alone, our acts do play a role, as you can get from the answers above, so I'm not sure why people say our acts don't count for anything. In the end, it is true it is by the Grace of Christ we are saved, because we are imperfect, but I can't see any reason in Him giving commandments and guidance through His teachings if it wasn't important for us to follow them. As Christ taught, it is by our actions He will know us.

Persevering to the end, not dropping out or falling to the way-side due to temptation, or persecution, proves that we were saved in the first place. Those truly born again, and inhabited by the Holy Spirit will find the grace and power to persevere; those people who aren't really Christians and do not have the Spirit, will fold in the face of either temptation or persecution.

Perseverance has nothing to do with salvation. Christ said the no one enters the Kingdom of Heaven but through Him. The only test is sincerity. Of course saying we believe then acting like a heathen most of the time isn't very sincere.

"Perserverance" makes the most sense if we look at salvation as being completely in God's hands from foreknowledge to eternal life. If the Holy Spirit is the one to give us a new heart, then can he not hold us in the palm of his hand no matter what may befall us? It's grace all the way through.

We are saved by grace which increases our faith. Perseverance involves keeping up the faith, and letting the faith reflect in your works.

It doesn't have to do with salvation but heavenly reward. We will not be judged for our sins because we have accepted Christ. Once saved we will be judged on our deeds and rewarded.

Our faith is always under attack by the devil, the world and our own flesh. It is against these assaults that we are to persevere.

HOW we persevere is also by faith.

1 John 5:3-5
4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
(from New International Version)

Eph 6:10-18

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
