Sure. Since you are interested in him and you suspect he might like you back, do you have anything to lose by finding out for certain? If his answer is no, then you no longer need to wonder and can go back to your life. If his answer is yes, then you will have a chance at a relationship with him... I wish you the best of luck.

Never ask your friend to do it, he might get attracted to your friend. If you can't do it then you're not ready to be seeing him as a dating person.
Go do your own work, how else is he supposed to know you really mean it?
