The reason why over hydrating can be dangerous is that when we consume large amounts of water when exercising, blood plasma (the liquid part of blood) increases, while the sodium concentration in the body fluids decreases, both as a result of the dilution by the water but also because sodium is lost by sweating. Hyponatremia, or low blood sodium, generally happens after drinking too much plain water and can lead to adverse effects and tissue damage, and interfere with brain, heart, and muscle function.

It depends on your body make up (weight & that good stuff) to determine how much. What happens is , the when body takes on too much water it dillutes the minerals, sodium in your body which affects your electrolytes, nerve responses causing possible cardiac arrest or even brain swelling.

Three litres of water is the upper amount one normally needs. Our military servicemen and women in Iraq during the summer often need twice that, sometimes more. You would, too, if you had to trot around in 120-degree heat (farenheit scale) with fifty or more pounds of combat gear!

This is true. It is called water toxification. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I'm guessing the extra water prevents your cells from functioning properly or causes them to burst.
