My oral surgeon tried hard to insist that I do the anasthesia that makes you basically sleep through it. I feel that if you can avoid such a thing you should because of the risks. Obviously I'm somewhat paranoid, but I feel I can handle the discomfort. Am I being stupid or what?

Yes, I was very glad I was put to sleep. It is a pretty traumatic thing. Your oral surgeon knows what he is talking about listen to him.

Besides they put you in a light sleep, it is not very risky

No, you're not being stupid. I had all mine out at the same time with just novacaine. They weren't impacted, though, so it was relatively simple. I would never go under general anesthesia unless the oral surgeon was near a hospital and had a crash cart and ALCS certified nurses ON THE PREMISES!

EDIT: by the way, there was no discomfort during the procedure, in my experience. The pain is when you get home, later after the novocaine wears off. And, no, it was not a traumatic thing. LOL!!! who thinks this?

it depends on if your teeth are erupted or not. if they are erupted, it should be no problem with just novocaine. I would used nitrous with the novocaine if they have it. Just helps you relax and you wouldnt be so tense. If your teeth are not erupted yet, i would take a medication .. kind of like a valuum. You dont HAVE to have anesthesia if you dont want.. it is kind of spendy too. Ask the oral surgeon (or your dentist, who ever is extracting your teeth) if they have something else besides anesthesia but more than just novocaine. If not, call around to other dentists who do.
Good luck

no you'll be okay as long as youre not afraid of all the dentists tools. i got mine taken out with only novocain and the laughing gas and i didnt feel a thing. I dont even think i needed the laughing gas. youre still gonna feel a lot pain afterwards though once all the dope wears off. So really it doesnt matter to me cause its gonna hurt regardless.

Do what you feel comfortable with. For me, I prefer IV sedation. By the time novacane takes effect, you are out and it is faster a procedure. IV sedation is very safe today because you are basically awake only in la la land.
You are not put under General anestesia that is for major surgeries It is called Conscious Sedation.. You will not remember a thing

No you are not dumb..I'm a dental assistant and we take out teeth all the time. Everything from Boney impaction to fully erupted and all the same result. I would only have the general if you are really nervious but otherwise I wouldn't put myself at risk...Good Luck stick to your guns

No, I had four of them taken out with Novocaine and although it was a bit uncomfortable I wasn't sick from the anasthesia when it was over.
