A grieving family would not want to have to cook. It's much easier to have food already made; One less thing to worry about. It's also nice to show you're thinking of them at their time of need.

It's not just fruit baskets. When my grandmother passed away, we received many different kinds of food, including canned goods, desserts, cakes; etc.

Any food is good. When someone passes alot of family and friends come around, but the person is obviously too bereaved to cook or feed the guests. So, it's nice to send things that around for people to eat or snack on so that the family has one less thing to worry about. When my grandfather died I remember people brought over casseroles and desserts and different things. Then everyone had plenty to eat but we didn't have to worry about fixing things in our bereaved state.

Actually in my family I have experienced people sending roasts, salads, barbecued chickens and briskets, rice, and deserts for sharing with the guests who go over to the house after the funeral.

It doesn't have to be fruit, but it is often food.

When there is a death in the family, no one feels much like cooking, but the need to eat goes on.

I don't send fruit. I send copies of the will so they can see if they hit the jackpot or got left behind. Cheers.
