Hey, Thanks for the great question. The best advice I can give your right now is do your research. I recommend asking around and getting a lot of different opinions. Remember every golfer started where you are now. At the beginning! So, don't be afraid to ask questions. Once you do your research you'll usually find a set of clubs a number of people recommend over and over again. I recommend buying from a local shop or club. This way you can try them out and see how they feel and you won't have to worry about them arriving broken. You'll also be able to have them fitted if it's necessary. The last tip is expensive clubs don't mean their high quality. Some of the best clubs I've ever had were the cheapest. On the other hand don't be shy about spending money. If your truly serious about playing golf your not going to want to buy a new set of clubs in a few months. I also recommend looking into a set of Ping golf clubs. Ping is known for their beginner level clubs. Thanks again for the wonderful question. I hope I helped! Have Fun, Cameron

If you're just starting out, you don't know "how long" or "if" you're going to continue to play. Borrow a set from a buddy and try his for a round or two. If you decide to stick with it a little while longer, buy a decent used set (from a guy who bought new clubs then decided he didn't like the game after all). While "technology" certainly has it's place in golf, not at the beginner level (or even the intermediate level). I'm a 12 handicap (I was a 4 in my younger days), and have been playing off and on for almost 40 years. The best rounds I've played were with old beater clubs. Golf is more about "feel" and "confidence" than "technology". You can go hi-tech (and expensive) after you've got a season or two under your belt.

This is what you should do:

Go to your local golf store to try expensive, brand-name golf clubs. Try drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, and putters.

After you choose the ones that you like, buy the clone, or knock-off versions. They are just as good as the expensive ones, but way cheaper. They even look similar.

Say you like the Callaway X-460 driver. On a clone website, it'll say so and so model, then in parentheses they'll say (Comparable to the Callaway X-460).

Golf clubs are overpriced A LOT. A driver sells for $350 average. But the cost to make them is less than $20!

A good clone site is: http://www.valuegolfclubs.com/Drivers

So you can just buy from a cheap site like: http://www.redwinggolf.com/category_s/173.htm

It doesn't have clones, but it has very good clubs for cheap.

That's a pretty solid budget for beginners. You can actually get a pretty good set of clubs! Check out the top brands entry level set. Such as the Taylor Made R5 irons. If you buy last year's models right now, you can get the irons for about $300 and another $300-$450 for the woods.

Taylormade is a good brand. I would go to Sports Authority, or somewhere else that is a multi-sport shop. (not a golf pro shop) There is a big difference between the cheap sets and an expensive set, but if you are a beginner, you probably won't be able to tell. Golden Bear is also a good brand.

Nike slingshots are very good. Easy to hit and forgiving, everything a beginner needs. Great distance too. Graphite would be best!

Definately get used ones.

You will be better off with used Taylormade, Callaway, Ping, Titleist than new "no name" walmart clubs.

Make sure that you get Regular shafts (R). You will not be able to use Stiff shafts (S)
