They don't need to. Insurance companies report to the DMV on the day that the policy is cancelled and that automatically gets included in any report that an officer makes when he 'runs' your registration.

That is why the PD no longer asks for proof of registration.

If the officer actually ASKs for it, you know you are f*cked from the start because it is coming up as un-insured.

At that point you better call a cab because the vehicle likely to get to get towed and YOU are well on the road to a 6 week suspended license (not to mention a rather stiff fine).

There is a bottom line here which you already know.

HEY they have been able to due this for a while now.
your insurance company notifies the dmv electronicaly that your policy has lapsed. if it says that at 12:04 am of the 27 th of December you dont have insurance belive me they are notifying the dmv at12:04.01 your insurance is lapsed if they dont the are liable for any and all accedents you might be involved in atfer the expiration time and date.
