I just bought a pair of Tasco scopes a few months ago. I put one on my new 10/22 All Weather and the other on my Winchester 310 single shot .22. I bought the Silver Antler 3-9x40mm.. The model number is SA39X40. They are both very clear, especially at sunrise and sunset. A lot better light gathering than a comparable 32mm scope. I bought them at a local gun show new in the box for $29.95 each and the rings I bought were $7.00, so you should be able to stay well under $50.00 total even if you buy online and pay a shipping charge.
Tasco has a a lifetime warranty too.
Some local stores carry them too, I believe ***** had a sale on them right around Christmas.

Within the limits of it's effective range you can get by quite well with a scope of 4 power. Save up another $20 and you can get a Nikon Prostaff 4x32mm Rimfire or Weaver 4x28mm that will last you the life of the rifle. If you want a good variable scope you'll want to save a little more because Weaver makes a nice 2.5-7 power scope that seems to sell for around $125. -edit- I forgot about the Simmons line. In their price bracket they are probably the best scopes around. So if you really need to keep it under $80 that's the way to go. No experience with Vortex outside of looking at a couple binocs at a birding shop but they seemed quite good for the money.

Tasco and Simmons both make "rimfire" scopes just for .22s. The 3-9 power scopes go for $40 to $50 and are parallax adjusted for 50 yards for the typical rimfire shot distance. I have one of each and can tell no difference in quality. Check with Natchez Shooter's Supply, they usually have good deals on them.

It depends on what you are looking for. For plinking, I went to a gun show and bought a $10 scope. It works well actually and it is on a $50 rifle, so the whole package is cheap.

I have a Bushnell on a Ruger 10/22, which is really nice, but a bit of over kill.

I would suggest going to a gun show and see what kind of deal you can find.

i personally have a tasco 3-9x40 on my ruger. i'm not exactly sure which model, but it is great for the money. it may be a bit too powerfull for a .22, but its nice for small targets such as squirls. it has never fogged up on me, and it came with slip on filters that make it easier to see on a bright day. the filter also prevents the scope from getting scratched. as far as sighting in, it is very easy. the dials are clearly marked, and you can turn them with your fingers. check out tasco, they are superior for the money.

i also suggest getting see through scope mounts. they might raise the scope up slightly, but they are very nice for close range shots(as in most shots you will take with a .22). you can pick up a set of these for around $15, try ebay.
