I live in CA and had my son's name changed to mine at 7 years of age. His father did not pay child support and had had 0 contact with our son after the boy was 17 months old. It was granted on the grounds of abandonment.

If his name is on the birth certificate I think that you need to contact him about a court date so that a Judge can make a ruling. If he has never signed any paperwork saying that he acknowledges that the child is his, I think you will have an easier time.

I DON'T SEE WHY NOT. I WAS A SINGLE MOM, NO CHILD SUPPORT, MY SON WHO IS 25 HAS NEVER MET HIS DAD YET. AND I HAD GIVEN HIM MY LAST NAME SINCE BIRTH. SO I REALLY DON'T SEE THE PROBLEM WITH IT.
