The position on the grid for excel, for example A1 is the very first cell in the top left corner.

The cells references are the numbers down the left hand side and the letters across the top.
You can do calculations within these cells and the can be simple or really really complicated. I love excel.
Example. If you put the number 2 in cell A1 and number 8 in cell B1 the type in the following in cell C1:
=a1 + b1
then hit return it will give you the answer for 2 + 8.
There's all sorts of stuff you can do, but I'm actually boring myself now so I'll shut up.

You can use the labels of columns and rows on a worksheet to refer to the cells within those columns and rows. Or you can create descriptive names to represent cells, ranges of cells, formulas, or constant values.
Cell Reference allows you to assign a name to a range of cells.
