My mom had brain surgery to remove 2 aneurysms. She now is physically disabled and can not work. Her health is so poor she will probably never work again. Her health insurance company she had with her old job just dropped her and I found a company named Cobra that will accept her for now but they want almost 1,000 now and then over 400 a month. No one in our family can afford this sort of payment and she has to have health insurance. She is 62 years old. Would she qualify for medicare? What would you do in my situation? I am so worried thanks..

she needs to apply for disability. Be aware that she may be turned down the first attempt, most people are. She also needs to see about the Medicare option as well since the disability is only going to cover her lost income, not provide medical insurance. Be aware also, (at least in the state that I live in) if she doesn't continue her insurance coverage through Cobra, if more than 60 days go by, she will be placed on a "previous condition" clause for a year. If she should buy a temporary policy through another company, or lucky enough to feel better to get another job, it doesn't matter, the pre existing condition will still apply. Which means any medical costs incurred due to her recent condition will not be covered.

COBRA coverage came about as a result of the 1986 Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act that provides for continuous coverage for persons for a period of time after they have left coverage from their prior employer. However, you have to pay the entire premium in order to get the same benefits as the prior coverage from the employer. I suggest you do an online search for Cobra insurance and read up on it. There is also a Cobra alternative that is less costly, but probably doesn't cover as much. Unfortunately, your mother now has a very serious "pre-existing condition" due to her recent surgeries and most companies will not cover that in the future except after a fairly lengthy waiting period, and then at probably much higher rates. Anyone who is seriously ill going into an insurance contract is viewed by the company as an extreme risk and a large claim just waiting to happen. As a last resort, if your mother does not have any means, it's quite likely she may have to go on public assistance in which case she would become eligible for the Medicaid program (must be low income) which would cover her for some medical expenses.

My mom is in the same situation and she checked with her human resources in our county. I think at her age she will qualify, but you also might want to look into getting onto disability with social security.

the main offensive element that I even have study in those solutions are that people who % the government to assist them out with scientific assurance are lazy. specific they are......i assume i'm between the various who's lazy besides. i'm between those that could fairly % to be waiting to hold down a job, besides the undeniable fact that I even have assorted scientific subject concerns that forestall me from not working. I did artwork and that i did pay into the "device". To lump all and sundry that won't be able to have the money for wellbeing care assurance into one group and phone them lazy is lack of understanding on a scale that i won't even start to fathom. not all and sundry that cant have the money for scientific assurance smokes, could you think that some people who cant have the money for scientific assurance has to make a sort of procuring housing and for transportation and oh yea groceries and a few human beings ought to pay 1000's of greenbacks for drugs out of pocket whilst they are not lined by using assurance. human beings do not end and think of whilst it comes right down to it on the top of the day. Its lots greater handy to slap a label on a collection of human beings then lending a hand and help somebody up.
