Because you set high expectations for yourself and if the meal isn't PERFECT, you don't think it's good enough. Next time you cook take it to work and have someone else try it. Getting feedback from people that will be honest with you will tell you if it is good or not. Or when eating it, compare it to a resturant that serves the same thing. You might realize that way that your hamburger and fries is much better than Wendy's or McDonalds.

I think the smell thing is accurate (I often have my DH cook occasionally just so I can luxuriate in the smells coming from the kitchen, which otherwise my nose has become accommodated to and can't register).

Also, as sort of mentioned before, you KNOW what you're preparing (and know a lot about its shape, look, etc.) so there's no pleasant and sudden surprise when you sit down to eat. That's one good thing about eating someone else's cooking... or getting to satisfy the anticipation brought up by the particular smells.

I do like most of my own cooking though (and chefs and other people who like cooking do too), so I don't think it should be a deal breaker. It takes a while though to learn to cook, and to be able to produce things that taste just right to you. It's also true that not having to cook when you don't want to sometimes makes anything else taste better.

I know several people who do not like to eat or have little appetite after they have finished cooking despite the fact that what they cooked taste so good. They say it is because they already feel full from smelling all of the aroma while they were preparing the food. Maybe that is also your case. Your olfactory nerves are so overcome by the smell that your desire to eat them has already tapered off.

I used to be like that. Seriously. It took finding the right recipes and more practice. When it doesn't taste right, think about what could improve it. It's a strange aversion to have for sure, but you can overcome it.

I'm still sort of like that. I could cook all night at my restaurant and get raves, but I wouldn't eat it. I'd go home and make some ramen.

Join the club...I too do not like anything I cook! My family enjoys the cooking, but I do not. I believe it is because I do not like to cook in the first place. I would rather have someone else do the cooking, that I throughly enjoy! Do you like to cook? If not I think that is your problem and that is why you do not like your own cooking.

Maybe if you took some cooking lessons you would be pleased with your cooking. Perhaps you set your expectations of what the food will taste like too high?

probably because you have to stand over the stove and by the time you get done cooking your tired of looking at what you've cooked....take a night off and have someone cook for you for a change

Because everything always tastes better when someone else makes it. Its not that your a bad cook, but if someone else makes the same thing you do, do you ever notice that theirs tastes better?
