Tomorrow is my sons 10th birthday. Thursdays is my daughters 15th. We will not be paid for at least two weeks and we intend on making it up to them at that time. But right now, I don't want to totally neglect thier special day. I have offered to cook them the meal of thier choice on their birthdays. I am not sure whether to buy a cake or make one. I still want to do something nice but today my creativity is lacking. any ideas? Remember cash is short right now. They got pretty much everything they wanted at Christmas and since we have had problems with our family it is hard to have a party and the school will not allow me to send sweets to class. Furthermore. My daughter has afterschool quiz bowl on her birthday followed by her brothers basketball game. I really don't want thier feelings hurt because of our financial situation this week. help.

life gets tough like that sometimes. you said something about making a cake, have the children help. your younger child will be happy with pretty much anything and your older daughter, let her have friends over on the weekend buy cheap pop, chips from the dollar store play music and have games out for them to do. but if that's to much let them at least have cake and plan a surprise later on!!! Don't stress, they know Christmas has just past explain to them, they will love the honesty that's a given!!!

take them to someplace that doesn't cost anything, like the zoo? you can cook them a birthday cake (with candy- you can make candy out of a cook book), You could take them to a library and tell him to pick out any book he wants, (some people don't go to the library very much so that would be something new) OR you can make them a card out of pictures and print it out on your computer AND put in a home made coupon for ANY toy having it start whenever you have your next pay check. (it could make the birthday last longer) You can put up decorations out of printer paper, surprise him...Hope this helps!

how about sending flowers/balloon arrangement to the class so the kids feel "special" in class?

i'd say bake them cakes :). u can decorate it w/ cute cookies or plastic toys..... or cut it into cute shapes? or u can do cupcakes arranged on platters to look decorative?

decorate the house w/ hand made items.. u can make roses out of crepe paper, tissues, pipe cleaners and watercolors. or u can put up a collage of cute pictures from their youth to now as a centerpiece of the dinner table.

perhaps u can make a coupon book for the kids.... u can say "valid this date (date u get ur paycheck!): coupon for ride to the mall w/ friends", or "coupon for sleepover", or "1 gift of ur choice @ Target, Walmart, or Kohl's"... stuff like that :). im sure they understand, and will appreciate the gesture. good luck!!!

Do what you can and leave it at that. Don't teach them that they are entitled to something huge. There are many unfortunate kids out there that never celebrate christmas or birthdays. Make it a point to get them to understand that. They will never forget the lesson. When you have the money, then do what you want for them.

You could make them King/Queen for the day. Kinda like the old TV show. Obviously they know they can't ask for material stuff, but you could pamper them and tell them you must do as they say (within reason :). Betcha they will remember the birthday! I have the same issue, as my daughters bday is Jan 6.
