California Highway 101 is called the 101, it runs through Hollywood, to the southwest of the Hollywood sign and to the west of Griffith park, passing on it's northward journey-----the Hollywood Bowl on the West. Once through the mountains it veers west to the coast and then parallells the PCH (which is the 1)-----LOL but that's another story....

In LA or California it means Highway 101. Or the Freeway 101. All depends upon what part of the state you are in. It is a state highway and not an Interstate.

If someone says they live off the 101. I means they live close to Highway 101.

If you mean a class, like "Parenting 101", usually colleges have numbered courses - the higher the number, the harder the course.

101 is often the "introductory" course, so now people use it for other things, like "Mechanics 101" or "Dating 101". It means learning at the very basic level.
