My Tv is somewhat new(only a year or so old) and my DVD player is an expensive Yamaha model. I have adjusted the setting on my DVD player to 16x9 display but I still get the black bars og the screen when I try to watch the widescreen DVDs. What gives??

Not all wide screen DVD's are formatted the same. It seems some movies are formatted for even wider screens and in order to show the width there are black bands on the top and bottom. Nothing you can do about that.

An HDTV is 16X9, or 1.78 to 1ratio. Many widescreen DVD's are produced in 2.35 to 1. Make sure when purchasing your DVD's that they're 1.75 to 1 or you'll have to have the television do some stretching.

your tv is adjusting iteself to fit the entiore widescreen picture for you to see - so it has to adjust the height of the picture to fit in the width - hence the black lines above and below.
