The Harbour Cafe is great - friendly people, good food, would definitely recommend it.

It's on the front at the old end of town just before you go up the hill past the police station and the Britannia pub (which is quite scary pub as I recall).

Margate is definitely on the up, there's a lot of regeneration money being invested there at the moment.

Thanet College and Christ Church Canterbury University both have sites in Thanet and there are tons of opportunties to do all sorts of courses (great place to meet people).

Apparently, although I've never been, the shell grotto has to be seen - kitsch but amazing I'm told.

You'll also be within spitting distance of Broadstairs - folk week in August is definitely worth a vist; Ramsgate - also on the up; and long walks along the coastline, say from Kingsgate - chalk cliffs and sandy beaches.

Hope you settle in well. Just remember to avoid the noisy pubs and the cheesy amusement arcades and you'll be fine.

I don't live there, so have no axe to grind, but Margate is going 'up' in the world, and fast. A new art gallery is planned. The rail service to London is going to be vastly improved. There is development all over the town. Trendy coffee shops are springing up. There is still some deprivation it's true, but much less than even 2 years ago.
I would advise anyone who takes some kind of perverse pleasure in visiting what they would-no doubt- call a 'decaying seaside town' to enjoy it while it lasts. This year could be your last chance !. If you move there, for heaven's sake, if at all possible, BUY a property. How many places, in south-east England still have bargain properties right in the centre of town ? (Check out the development at seabathing hospital). Please do not pay rent, by summer 2008, you should have a tidy profit.
As for things to do; on a nice day, a bike ride to Broadstairs along the coast is lovely. Good luck in Margate !
