Just because he has no kids doesn't mean that he doesn't have nieces or nephews or even brothers and sisters that are still living. You seem to be a rather selfish person, can you not just spend time with him out of the kindness of your heart.

Enjoying the elderly?
You are nice to the elderly person, aren't you? You are his or her hero! How nice to celebrate Christmas with this lonely soul: life can get rather lonely, when friends and relatives have moved away or have died before us.
However, being nice to this person only to get inheritance would be a character flaw in my view. You can be nice even if you would not receive anything the older person leaves. It is just a nice human trait to be kind to older people and care for them. Thank you that you are doing it.
However, there may be surprises, one way or the other. In this case, it was the other way.
A woman took care of her elderly aunt, called her every Monday and traveled thousands of miles to see her at least once a year, although there were relatives living close by where the aunt was, but they were busy with their own lives. The niece also looked after the aunt's affairs and took care for her of things the aunt could no longer take care off.
One day the message came that the aunt had died. The niece was the only heir to all the aunt had possessed. Yet, since the aunt had been in a private nursing place for years, there could not be much left in savings than debts. The niece denied to accept the inheritance, since she was unable to handle the expected, tremendous debts.
Her sister urged her to at least look into it, if there was debt or something left, since the aunt had been rich at one time. The niece still refused but finally gave in. To her surprise she found that she would inherit $100,000 left of the richess of the aunt!
Did the niece do all the caring and favors for the aunt to get money? No, she did it to comfort the aunt. The aunt appreciated it so much that she left the niece as the only one in her will, when she originally had about ten other people listed.
This should be our goal: to be nice, helpful and comforting to the elderly and anyone else who needs and accepts our help, wit no reward expected.
You do a nice job, let go of toughts of rewards. If so, you may enjoy the old person and whatever may come your way.
Great job!

Just enjoy his company for exactly what it is...a living time machine. He can tell you of life in bygone times and the two of you can enjoy the recollections. He will have already given you an irreplaceable gift.
If he decides to leave his legacy to some worthy cause, you will have already been well taken care of. Besides, it's just a nice thing you're doing. Don't spoil it by being mercenary.

I don't see anything wrong with spending time with him, but I do feel that it's a bit deceptive and greedy to expect something in return.
If you don't want to do it simply for the joy you are giving him, then introduce him to someone who would and slowly withdraw from the situation.
There have been many like you who were sorely disappointed because they thought it an easy way to gain and, in the end, got nothing. They got what they deserved in my opinion!

What a terrible thing to suggest! I'm sure the old boy would rather be alone than to spend his time with someone who has no integrity.
Remember... someday you'll be 80 too!

Not at all. If you are going to do something, do it out of the kindness of your heart. Doing things for someone and expecting something in return is the number one way to get let down.

Just because somebody doesn't have any children doesn't mean that they haven't decided to leave it somebody else in their life or to an organization. And just because he enjoys your company doesn't mean he is going to run to the lawyer and put you in his will....... if he even has one. You think somebody is going to leave their money to someone they barely know? Boy are you an optimist.

If you have an ulterior motive then you should be ashamed. It makes you phony and this old guy deserves someone who sincerely cares about his best interests not someone who is after his money.
