I'm changing my diet to include 2 32fl oz of 38gm of protein a day. But there are time that I will not work out. What will happen to that protein if I don't work out? Will it turn to fat? Will it be in storage? Should I not drink the protein when I don't work out? Please advise.

If your getting 38 grams of protein per shake times two, which equals 76 grams and you are eating other foods which include protien, you are going over your limit. Excess protein not only turns to fat but can be dangerous. High protein causes undue strain on the kidneys, as protein turns to nitrogen which the kidneys need to excrete, therefore the kidneys work harder and that can increase your blood pressure.
On the days you do not work out eliminate the protein drinks and eat your regular meals or if you have the drinks do not have anymore protein that day.
Remember protien drinks are supplements with a ton of protein which can be unhealthy if you incorporate other protein foods in your diet . When you have too much protein your body makes homosysteine which is a leading cause of hypertension and hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) so if your not working out and using all that protein you can be causing havoc with your body.So just be sensible and have fun working out!

Your body requires protein to repair its muscles even when your not working out. In fact its crucial to feed your muscles protein on your "off" days. I assume that's what your talking about, not prolonged periods of inactivity. Your muscles are the most starved for protein for about an hour after a workout, but their are building/repairing themselves for several days after the workout. Also your body can only process so much protein at a given time, the excess will be turned into waste. It's also important what your put in your protein shakes. Use a nice whey protein, and it doesn't hurt to add fresh or frozen berries, flax seed, bananas, skim milk or water. Make sure to avoid adding any processed sugars or foods high in fats.

that depends on what you actually mean by not working out.

if you are talking about stopping resistance training all together than the majority of that protein will be excreted as waste.

when you stop working out muscle protein turnover, muscle protein synthesis and the amount of protein that the body actually utilizes all decrease.

for all those that answered that excess protein gets converted to fat you are completely misinformed. in order for dietary protein to be converted to fat first it must be digested and broken down into amino acids. if those amino acids are not used the majority of them are excreted. the amino acids that remain may be converted to glycogen. if glycogen stores in skeletal muscle and in the liver are full then they may be converted to lipids and then stored in adipocytes (fat cells). this does not happen on a large scale is it takes more energy to convert amino acids into lipids than the actually energy that the lipids provide.

Edit:

muscle protein synthesis is highest 24-48 hours after a session of resistance training. that being said your protein intake should not change on off days from the gym. you should ingest the same amount of protein every day if gaining muscle mass is the primary objective.
