I love Chickens as pets- they are cute- especially Japanese Silkies! My girlfriend has one, and he is incredibly adorable.

But the only thing I don't really like is the excrement thing. Apparently, chickens just sh*t wherever they feel like it. But can you train a chicken to defecate, say, in a litter box, or something similar?

No, you can't potty train chickens or birds in general. It's not a matter of intelligence -- even parrots, which are very smart, do not potty train. Bird owners accept this as the reality of owning pet birds.

BTW, I disagree with people who say that chickens are stupid -- they are a lot smarter than most people think. In fact, a chicken has the intelligence of a 3-year-old child. However, chickens raised under factory farm conditions are "stupid" when it comes to basic survival skills because they spend their whole lives in cages. Factory farm "rescues" I've had didn't even know how to scratch for bugs and did not recognize worms as food -- but they learned pretty fast from watching my own chickens. My chickens are all hatched under hens, raised by hens, and pretty savvy about how to get along in the world. But potty trained they are not! My banty rooster will sit on my lap, but I need to put a towel down first... That's life!

No chickens and geese are not able to be "potty expert" they cross wherein ever they wish while ever they wish. Also their feces smells very dangerous and may be very messy. Livestock sort birds aren't intended to be stored as indoor pets. They must reside external in a coop or barn with lots of room to graze on grass and insects. It isn't that they're too dumb they're simply now not puppies and cats that may be expert. They have one more sort of mind. There are matters known as chook or duck diapers. you may also wish to investigate into the ones. They have them on Ebay Also eggs cannot simply hatch they have got to be in an incubator for 21 days for chickens and 30 days for geese.

I love this question because from experience I know the answer is yes. When I was 12 I had a pet chicken who lived in my bedroom 24/7 and slept with me in my water bed. Whenn she had to go she would get up and get into her cage beside the bed and go on the newspaper. She was very very tame. It took a lot of patience and time but it can be done. Good luck! Thanks for bringing back a great memory for me. :-) Claire

I seriously doubt it. Then again, I didnt' know rabbits could be potty trained till I got one... so??? But... rabbits and other animals often "go" in a particular spot... making potty training quite easy. Just put the box where they go. But chickens... yeah... mine go EVERYWHERE. I need to go spray off my patio because with the lousy weather, they've been hanging out there so it's a big mess. Ugh. If you have any luck.. definitely let me know!

No you can't train a chicken to step off a burning fire. They are so stupid it is breathtaking. I had one hurl itself against the side of the coop for five minutes cause it was hungry and it saw food, rather than walk two feet over to the wide open door.
