who doesn't like him.
He was a great artist.
The way he played with the human eye and mind is just great. I think he makes a good introduction into modern art for anyone starting to study art. It's still visually recognisable but it's not realistic. You never really know what you're looking at with magritte. My favorite picture must be his most famous one nl. La pipe. It takes a very smart man to indeed prove the point he made in such a simple image. I've explained this picture to people manier times and the reaction is similar each time. At first they don't get why it's not a pipe untill you ask the same question he did. Can you stuff tobaco in this pipe. It's just great to see the amazment on people's faces when they finally get the point on his pictures. but then again most of his pictures don't make a point but leave you wondering what exactly it is. it's great to keep working it out time and time again
And the great thing that fills me with pride is he was a fellow countryman of mine.

I certainly like him, but I have not seen all of his work. I did use one of his ideas in modifying a photograph that I took in Italy. There is a small walled city at Bagnoreggio that I photographed from a neighboring mountain with the idea akin to a painting by Magritte where there is a large rock in the sky over a beach and the large rock has a small city on top of it. I used Adobe PS 7 to modify it in a Magritte mode.

I adore Rene Magritte. I really love surrealism, in all forms, including films and print. If you're into that kind of stuff, you should check out Hieronyus Bosch.

I liked Rene and Georgette and their dog...after the war.
I think you will find that millions of people have stopped and stared without ever knowing the why or the who.
Style and insight exist beyond the simplicity of knowledge.

His mother drown when he was a boy. Her body was found with her dress over her head. So when you see that in his paintings, that was a reference to his mother. He also worked in a wall paper factory. You can see that influence in te multiple images that appear in some of his work. He also made counterfeit paintings during the war. You can google him, there is plenty of info out there.
