The cat in question is an ouside one but because it's become so cold in our area we have considered bringing him in temporarily. We have the Advantage flea treatment we got at the vet for our own inside cats and we could use that. But fleas tend to drop very quickly. I was told in the past that on extremely cold days fleas tend to drop from the cold and if we were to bring him in that would be the best time to do it.

Fleas will stay on the nice, warm cat no matter how cold it gets outside. Get flea meds for your cat if it has a problem.

A couple of suggestions:

1 - keep the cat indoors (once you rid it of the fleas)
2 - if you MUST treat it, see if your vet has the flea "shot" - it's less toxic at least on the surface, than the topical treatments - those work by YOU spreading the liquid onto the cats fur when you pet it
3 - try flea combs - ask you vet or pet supply store
4 - if they get into your carpeting, vacuum a lot; try "diatamaceous (sp?) earth -a "powder" commonly used for pool cleaning, that is an extremely small particle form of dirt, that will smother or choke the fleas yet is relatively harmless to you & pets - spread it into your carpet, leave for a few days, then vacuum
5 - refer back to #1 :-)

As you can see, temp has little or no effect on the fleas.

Fleas will stay on an animal no matter the temp. If there is a meal for the fleas(blood) then the animal will have fleas. Get the cat on a preventative that will help

Fleas will not leave the cat, no matter the temperature outside. The fleas are attracted to the body heat that your cat is giving off.

If you have a inside cat with fleas then you have a house with fleas. They never leave, they are hard to get rid of.

I was born and raised in Utah and fleas don't exist in Utah. Now, the winters can get pretty darn cold, but the summer can get really hot too, but the fleas never even come around in the warm weather. So, I wonder if humidity might have something to do with it, because humidity is usually in the single digits in Utah in the summer.

Frost and below freezing temperatures kill fleas outside. If you are having flea problems, you need to see your vet about Advantage or Frontline or some other remedy.

I know that in the chicagoland area, nomally around october is when most people don't see fleas on their animals until about march so I would say at least about 30 degrees.

The colder it is, the happier the fleas will be to stay on your cat.

Try using advantage on your cat. It works way better then any other treatment. yOu can buy it at any vet's office
