NO, regular dvd player won't be able to play Blu-ray or Hd-dvd. A Blu-ray or HD-dvd player, on the other hand can play normal dvd alongside with the hd disc. HD discs will look clearrer on a HDTV because they are mastered in 1080p resolution compared to 480p for normal dvds.

Look at it this way. Would the stores be selling Blu Ray or HD DVD players if Blu ray and HD DVD's could be played in a regular DVD player? Who in their right mind would pay up to $1000 for a player if a $100 could do the same thing?

No, you need a new DVD player with the technology to transmit HD. You're in luck!! Now they have "hybrid" players that will play both HD DVDs and BlueRay. Playstation 3 will also play BlueRay DVDs if you are going to get one of those in the near future. Good luck.

No, it will not work. You need an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player.
You need different lasers and more powerful decoders.
That's why those players cost $500 or more.
