There was no real "first religion" as such. All religions developed from Animist and shamanic beliefs, into polytheistic beliefs and on to monotheistic ones.

I'd say though that the oldest "religion" you are going to find to today is that of the San people of Southern Africa. (The Bushmen, for people who don't know) They still follow much the same animist belief system they did way back when, and are considered to be the oldest community of people on earth.

PS.
Animism - belief that all things have spirits, including rocks, trees, rivers, the sky etc.
Polytheism - belief in many different gods, each with a different sphere of influence
Monotheism - belief in one supreme god.

First religion?
When one studies Professor Herman Wirth Roeper Bosch, it becomes clear that the first religion we know of was the one in the One God of Love. Only later all the other forms of religions grew out of it.

Animism

It was Islaam.

First lets see the definition of Islaam and Muslim.

Islam means submitting to Allaah, worshipping Him alone and obeying Him, and shunning shirk (polytheism, associating others with Allaah) and those who believe in that. This is the religion which Allaah approves for His slaves. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Truly, the religion with Allaah is Islam”

[Aal- ‘Imraan 3:19]

“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:85]

The person who enters this religion is called a Muslim (one who submits), because he has submitted (aslama) to all the rulings that have come from Allaah and from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And who turns away from the religion of Ibraaheem (Abraham) (i.e. Islamic Monotheism) except him who befools himself? Truly, We chose him in this world and verily, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.

When his Lord said to him, ‘Submit (i.e. be a Muslim)!’ He said, ‘I have submitted myself (as a Muslim) to the Lord of the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists).’” [al-Baqarah 2:130-131]

“Yes, but whoever submits his face (himself) to Allaah (i.e. follows Allaah’s religion of Islamic Monotheism) and he is a Muhsin ( a doer of good who does good deeds solely for the sake of Allaah) then his reward is with his Lord (Allaah), on such shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve”

[al-Baqarah 2:112].

All the Prophets, such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Ishmael, Jacob, Moses, Jesus, David, Solomon etc, they all came down with the same message, which was that There is no one worthy of worship except God, and I am a Messenger. They Submitted themselves to God, all the Prophets, submitted themselves. Which makes them a Muslim. So it was Islaam. Judaism and Christianity are on the same line as Islaam. Somethings which are permissible for the Jews are not allowed for Muslims, such as Gold, and vice versa with Christianity as well.

pagan religions are ancient. They worship nature (sun, etc.). People have been worshipping the creation instead of the creator for thousands of years.
