Joe Stalin's military was called the "Red Army" when he came to power the first thing he did was kill all the officers. Then he abolished the rank structure so it was disorganized. Then he invaded Finland, but it was such a disaster he had to make new officers. Then Germany invaded and beat the Red Army to a pulp. Luckily there were millions of Russians, so Joe had replacements. He brought back the old ranks and traditions and hired a general named Zhukov who was cool. Then they built lots of super tanks called T-52s I think. Then they invaded Germany and killed Hitler and millions of Germans and the ones they took prisoner they sent to Siberia to freeze to death.

he did not tolerate retreat and had special red guard units to machine gun any soviets retreating from germans - they would yell out ' not a step back ' !!!!! ' Death to traitors ' and then shot them down . It was a costly way to win but if he had not have done that the germans would have taken Stalingrad as easy as they took Kiev and the soviet union would have been no more -
he had a huge military - especially tanks - infantry - artillery with the red airforce rapidly improving in numbers and skill by 1943

He was very authoritarian; his political Commisars had the power to shoot soldiers who they thought were not doing their job well enough. He would also periodically conduct purges of his officers corps, shooting or imprisoning those he had tired of, and promoting others. It wasnt a good thing to be a general with him in charge.
