Here are some ways I've collected at my site... though most of them are cracking so that the halves will stay intact, some of the info may still help:

… English walnuts are easily avilable and easiest to crack
.....black walnuts are harder to find and hard to crack... also leave black stains on hands... but taste wonderful

.......older (less fresh) walnuts do best...these seem to take on the smell of paint and taste is preferred by some)

...hold 2 in the palm of hand & squeeze against each other
...or use a nutcracker .
...soaking walnuts in water for 1/2 hour first may help
...or easily cut with a band saw, or Dremel cutting wheel
...or hold in vise, and cut with small hand saw
...or squeeze in vise or in a trigger-type vise

....several cutting methods, most are complicated? http://tomclothier.hort.net/page21.html

........ my Greatgrandfather had a black walnut tree and when we went to visit, he would put us kids to removing the *husks* from the black walnuts. What he did was to give is a board with a hole in it just slightly smaller than the walnuts with the husk on... we were also given a mallet or hammer ...the trick was to put the nut over the hole and hammer it through the hole.... I was amazed the first time I did it. That nasty greenish black husk just came right off..... (but if you leave the nuts lying, the husk eventually splits and can be peeled off, at least that's what is happening to the nuts out in our parking area). J. Smith

How To Crack Walnuts

It's been my experience that a tack hammer works pretty well. Solid, but not too heavy. If you're more worried about cracking the nut than the eating thereof, however, I think you ought to try the following:

1. Locate (or build) a ten-foot tall wall made of reinforced concrete.
2. Rent a semi. Probably gonna want that insurance policy, too.
3. Apply nut to wall at waist level. This can be done using duct tape, or any other available adhesive.
4. With a 1-mile clearance, drive the truck toward the wall, reaching a top speed of no less than 88 miles/hour.
5. When impact is imminent, bail from the truck's cabin. Be sure to tuck your arms, to prevent nut-eating-impeding injuries from occurring.
6. After the flames subside, locate the largest little nut-bit you can find, and enjoy!

What is the best way to crack open a shelled walnut? Place nutcracker on the seam of walnut. And then crack.....

my damn dog, we had a whole basket full of walnuts and we leaft for a couple hours, and came back and the floor was covered in walnut shells. You could not see the floor through the shells, and then my dog crapped walnuts for the next 3 days.

The best way? It depends on what you're in the mood to see. I personally like large explosions -- but from a distance because I don't need the hard-core skin exfoliation from those walnut shells. I already get enough from my loufa sponge and Apricot scrub.

I know someone (male) who cracks them by squeezing 2 together in his fist. I (female) can't do that, but you might try it and see if it works for you.
