I'm sorry but there's no such thing as a "free" cat or kitten. There are vet bills, vaccinations, spay/neuter, food, litter, de-worming, de-fleeing, etc, etc, etc. Why is it too hard to get one from your local shelter? Did they turn you down for some reason? That's your safest and best way to get a healthy cat. You'd also be helping a truly needy charity.

Save up your money and get one from a shelter. Even free kittens are not free. I got one cat from the shelter. I paid $35 for her (this was 9 years ago, i don't know what they cost now) She came spayed and with her first rounds of shots included in that price. I got another cat 5 years ago from a litter of kittens that my aunt's cat had. He was free, but after I got his shots and neutering done, he cost me over $100.

There is typically a "kitten season" each year when shelters get many kittens that need homes. If you wait until Spring when cats are more active and the weather is nicer, you will probably have more luck at the shelter. PetSmart and Petco feature shelter cats as well. I think they charge about $75.

I would guess the street. I'm sure you don't want an ally cat who could have rabies though. You should go to the pound. Those cats need homes, and risk being put to sleep. They will charge you though, (I think it's like 26 dollars for a kitten where I live in San Francisco), the cost depends on the county. The cost covers getting the cat fixed, its first set of shots, and a vet visit. I don't know,it might be different in NYC, but to me, that seems like a better idea than getting one for free. This way you are saving a cat's life.

Wait until the spring, I think lots of cats have kittens then. Try asking a pet store if they have any ideas.

I can tell you that I found a wonderful cat that was 2 years old (Approx). There was an ad for him on PetFinder.com. Its a great site because you can search for the animal you are looking for, breed, age, size, gender, and location.

Good Luck!

Shelter kittens are cheaper they come with their shots, spay/neuter, wormings, vet check, and whatever else. A free kitten has a greater chance of being sick. There are plenty of shelter kittens
