Like, I know it's a form of speech, but what makes them make the sound. I know the vocal cords but how is there's different than ours? And dogs. I hope this all makes sense.

I can do a pretty good cat impression. The cat I had when my daughter was a baby could modify it enough to sound like "Mom" when I was in the next room. The other person was right. It's what they do to get attention.

Cats meow at people when they want something. So the
vocalizations your cat makes are designed to get some attention
from you, or food, or playtime, whatever. Same thing goes for any
kind of disturbance calculated to get your attention. Any kind of
response other than ignoring your cat will actually reinforce the
behavior.

The meow can mean many things. They can be demanding and very
loud. Perhaps dinner is late, or their litter pan needs changing.
Meows can also be soft and sweet and affectionate, saying,
"Thanks for being my friend". Tiny "mews" are the cat's way of
manipulating the situation to get what they want. Most of us
cannot ignore the little innocent "mew" that pleads with our
emotions for a treat or petting session.

Lots of reasons. Cats may meow because they simply want attention or love from their owner. They meow because perhaps their dinner has not been served yet (they are hungry), or they might want to play. They meow when they see a bird or squirrel that is not possible for their tiny paws to reach. They meow if they are hurting or in pain. Sometimes they meow for absolutley no reason at all! Cats need to express themselves and communicate, even though we might not understand them. The Cat Fanciers Asscociation has a lot of helpful tips on things like that. If you would like to learn more about your pet's body language and other strange things they do, I recommend subscribing to their magazine: Cat Fancy. I receive it monthly and never had a thought of regretting it! Check out the link below for more info on the cats' meow.

The only time my cats meow is to inform me that they are hungry. They also make happy chirps when they are happy to show that they are having fun
My dogs tend to bark to alert people that they are around. They also bark to get attention from us.
Basically they make noises for the same reasons we do. They just have less words. Many times they have different pitches in their voices that you can figure out what they want if you know them long enough.

Communication, vocal chords like us. Except animals don't have the same chords as us. Different tones.
