Check Genesis 10:3...Ashkenaz is the grandson of Japheth. How can the Ashkenazi Jews claim to be descendants of Abraham...when Abraham (according to Genesis 11) is a direct descendant of Shem. How does that fit together?

The reality is that Ashkenazi jews are descendants from Japheth. Abraham came from Shem and if you read Genesis 10 and 11 scripture makes it very clear who is who. Revelations 2:9 makes it very clear as well...check it out!

The names of the ethnic Jewish groups are derived from the places on which they have settled.

Yemenite Jews are not really Yemenite by origin, they are Jews who settled the area.
Sephardic Jews (Spharad= Spain, in Hebrew) are not Jews who originate from Spain, but Jews who settled Spain and were spread to Europe and North Africa during the Inquisition.

Thus, Ashkenazi Jews are not descendants of Japheth, but they settle the land of the Ashkenazi people- the Germans.

Ashkenaz is the Hebrew word for Germany.
The Ashkenazim called themselves that because they were from Germany and other parts of Western Europe, just like the Sephardic Jews called themselves "Sephardim" because "Sepharad" means "Spain" in Hebrew. They were Jews from Iberia (Spain, Portugal).
