I once found a recipe for Aran Apple Bread... and then lost it. It was really simple... only a few ingredients .. but I can't figure out how it went together. The food writer said something about "a raid over the border," which makes it sound like something delicious ... it was like a simple dough with apple slices in the middle...maybe one spice...
I am sorry to be so fuzzy headed, but I thank you if you have a clue ...

Aran bread is spice bread and generally doesn´t have apple. I think your recipe would have taken out the rasins and citron and substituted them for apples.

Just in case I also give you an irish Soda Bread with apple cake variation so you will be able to experiment.

Irish Spice Bread - Aran Spiosrai
Ingredients:
• 10 oz Flour
• 2 ts Baking powder
• 1/2 ts Baking soda
• 1 ts Mixed spice
• 1/2 ts Ginger, ground
• 4 oz Sugar, brown, light
• 2 oz Citron, candied; chopped
• 6 oz Raisins, plain or golden
• 4 oz Butter
• 6 oz Golden syrup
• 1 lg Egg; beaten
• 4 T Milk

Directions:

Sift the flour with the soda and baking powder, and the mixed spice and ginger. Add the brown sugar, chopped peel and raisins and mix. Make a well in the center. Melt the butter with the syrup over low heat, then pour into the well in the mixture. Add the beaten egg and milk and mix very well. Pour into a greased 2-lb loaf pan and bake in a preheated oven at 325 F for 40-50 minutes, or until it tests done.

Soda Bread from Marjorie's Kitchen
http://ballina.mayo-ireland.ie/Brigown/SodaBrd.htm

INGREDIENTS

574g/ 4 cups (1.25 lbs. plain flour sieved)
1/2 teaspoon bread soda
15 fl oz (1/2 to 3/4 pt buttermilk) or sour milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
Small drop of fresh milk
1 rounded teaspoon Bextartar (raising agent)
25g/loz. sugar

Heat the pot/oven and grease with a little lard.
Mix all the dry ingredients in a basin and make a well in the centre.
Pour in nearly all the milk and egg; gather in the flour and mix to a loose dough, adding more milk if necessary.
With floured hands, knead lightly on a floured board or table and flatten out. Cut a cross on top.
Place dough in pot/oven; cover with heated lid. Place hot coals on top to give all round heat.
Alternatively bake in a greased round pyrex dish with lid, pre-heat oven (4250F, 2200C or gas 7 for 40 minutes).

To keep the bread soft, wrap in a clean damp tea towel when it is taken out of the oven.

Variation Apple Cake:

Place half the dough in pot/oven; add sliced cooked apple and sweeten with sugar. Cover with remaining dough. Press edges together; cover and bake in the same way.

I think this was more a 'potato bread' with apple pieces.

It wouldn't have been called "Cran-Apple Bread"? The recipe for which I just found on Google.
