Babel means confusion. At the tower of babel was where they tried to build an earthly structure to reach the Heavens. God "confused" their languages so they could not communicate, and they seperated to different parts of the earth.

babel is confusion of language, gibberish. Words without understanding.
We most often recognize this word beside tower - the Tower of Babel as mentioned in the Holy Bible. When man decided to build a tower to heaven, God stopped them by causing them to speak different languages and they could no longer understand one another.

Text:
-a city in the plain of Shinar. Tower built, and tongues confused at,
(Gen.11:1-9.
1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
6 The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
8 So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
9 That is why it was called Babel --because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth. )

Babel is mindless gibberish talking. When God confused the language at the tower Nimrod was having built to steal God's worship from him, the town where it happened lent it's name to the definition of this word because no one made sense to anyone else when they spoke.

Babel was a tower which people tried to build but God changed their language. They tried to build it high up to God and also tried to make himself god-like - the start of humanism.

A place where people tried to build a tower high enough to reach God. God struck it down and when it fell the people started speking different languages so they could't organize and do it again.
