The best way is to see a dentist to get the sub gingival tartar and calcus off first, and then practice good home care. It would be impossible (and irresponsible of me) for you to get under the tissue with just a toothbrush and floss to remove the built up debris that's causing the gingivitis in the first place. Talk to your dentist or find a new one, someone who will let you make payments. I can't tell you to treat yourself when I know you only have one paddle, you're going up a raging stream, with a hole in the boat, the size of a baseball, and no land in sight. Get my point? Please oh please oh please, I can't stress it enough, just go to the dentist! You could be causing irreversable damage by not going. Practice good home care with brushing with a soft brush and 2-3 times a day, flossing at least once a day, and mouthwash in the meantime. Good luck!

How do you know you have gingivitis if you haven't seen a dentist?

If you can't afford a dentist the best thing you could do to help is to floss after every meal not just once a day...Glide makes the most comfortable floss, it is a little more expensive but you are more likely to use it if it is more comfortable. In addition to flossing start using a mouth wash for gingivitis.

Good luck

Brush, floss, use a mouthwash like cephacol. They sell these little picks in the toothpaste aisle they are white with a green ruber tip with very small bristles on them . After flossing and brushing....take one of these tips and dip it into the mouthwash and slide in between each tooth like you are brushing the area. The small bristles will help your gums. You can reuse the pick a few times by rinsing it off. I use the same pick for 5-7 days, then start each week with a new one. Then follow up with rinsing your mouth with the mouthwash.

You don't need insurance to see a dentist. You may want to go for a cleaning and then start with this procedure. Just tell the dentist all you can afford is the cleaning and that you'll have the xrays, etc at a later date. They cannot force you to do anything you do not want, after all you are the consumer.

Also, you might want to start takin a vitamin C supplement starting out with 500mg a day working your way up to 1,000mg. vitamin c is good for healing the gums

Check your city and see if there is a dental hygiene school in the area or close by. I am currently a hygiene student and we are always looking for patients. Our school only charges like $30 and we clean your teeth, take x-rays and have a doctor look at you at your appointment. The only setback is that since we are still learning, it takes a little longer.

As far as your gingivitis, try brushing 2x per day, flossing 1x per day and use a mouthwash like Listerine (as long as you don't smoke or drink) or Crest Pro Health 1x per day. This is only standard care. To get a more of a personalized treatment plan go see a dental professional. Please do not use hydrogen peroxide unless your dentist has advised you to.

What you can do is brush and floss everyday to prevent plaque build up. Once plaque hardens on your teeth especially at the gum line and between teeth it becomes gingivitis. You can't remove the hardened plaque just by brushing alone. You can't cure it without a dentist. They go in and scrape in between the teeth and at the gum line. Since you have no insurance just get some money together and pay out of pocket. It's worth it for the health of your mouth. Plus it only takes one visit.

Brush your teeth 3 times a day and floss each time. Try using that new crest complete tooth paste and rinse.

You really should get in to the dentist. Gingivitis can get really nasty and all your teeth can fall out! Hopefully you are working towards getting insurance. Good Luck!

Gingivitis is caused by a plaque buildup around the base of the teeth allowing bacteria to build up. The combination of plaque and bacteria forces the gums to fail to attach properly to the teeth, however the bacteria mostly leads to tooth decay.

I would go to a drugstore and get a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) 3% and brush my teeth with that. Just pour some in your mouth and start brushing. Important, you can spit out the excess after brushing, but do not rinse as you want the Peroxide to stay around the teeth killing bacteria and eating the plaque.

You will see, your gums will feel better probably after the first brushing.

The only true way would be to go to a dentist for a really good cleaning.Honestly dental insurance is only worth it if you have serious work needed because it turns out to be more expensive than it's worth.A dental cleaning will run you around $55.00 or so you can get an estimate before you go on cleaning's and x-ray's.You need to take care of your gums or you will loose your teeth. So my advice is to go to the dentist

Gingivitis can be maintained if you want to maintain it. Dental is not fun, but important. Get an electric brush, you can even get them at the dollar store, brush twice a day, do not sip on soda, drink it, be done, and rinse with water when you are done. Same with sugar, if you can't brush, at least try to get the sugar off with water, otherwise it sits on the teeth, teams up with plaque and starts to form an acid which corodes/decays teeth.
