I used to train at the gym 4-5 times a week up until November last year and had a fantastic figure. I'm married and my husband unfortunately is overseas and we only get to see each other every 8 weeks or so. I miss him very much and just don't seem to get myself going. I've started to put weight and I've started having stress headaches again too and I know the gym always helped with this. My friend I used to train with is unable to train with me now. How do I get myself back into going to the gym?

Hi Hun,

Sometimes when life significantly changes, the training plan goes out of kilter, but you realise that you felt happier and healthier when you were training so lets get you back there.

Poor chicken you've also lost your training partner. We'll have to find you a new one!!!

What did you used to enjoy??? Did you used to do classes, like Aerobics, RPM, Body Pump, Body Combat, Circuits?? If you go a few time you'll recognise faces and you can maybe hook up with someone from one of the classes. Does your gym have a cafe corner? Some have... Hang around and chat to people. See who has similar goals. Does your gym have a running club or is there a running club in your area?? Running peeps are really friendly folk and really sociable too. If you have the money why not book some personal training sessions with a PT to get you back in the swing and introduce you to some people?

Come on, go back!! When you come back home you'll be glad you've gone. You know what its like - you don't feel like it at first but you'll feel loads better afterwards. You'll shift the weight in no time cos you used to be fit. It won't be like starting from scratch I promise. Once you're more occupied, you'll mope less and that can only be a good thing for any relationship.

Go on, you know you want to!!!! :-))

When you find the answer I'll be looking forward to reading it.
I started the gym this time last year... went for a couple of months... (as my other half was so motivated it helped me want to go too)... we moved area since then, and despite the gym still being quite close, my other half just wants to stay home, and me? I haven't been since! I'm cancelling the membership tomorrow, but deep down I really DO want to go... (and want to change jobs too) so while I don't know if I'm coming or going I want to cancel it so we don't spend £85 -/+ a month and neither of us go.
My only suggestion to you: 'Timetable' (time management)
Plan a REALISTIC time you'll get back from work/studies/shopping and have fixed hours you'll leave the house to get to and from the gym, (perhaps an hour first and start with 1 weekday and another on the weekend).
Prep a meal before you go out, something healthy and light, and yummy too - smthng that will be your focus for when you return. Remember the joy you felt after doing a workout, relaxing in the sauna/steam room, or joining a workout class... and perhaps focus on treating yourself, and husband every 2 months, to a gorgeous new dress that flatters that gym fit bod!
Good luck... it's all down to perseverance.

I used to train at the gym with somebody and then they stopped going and it felt a bit daunting going on my own, especially as they used to help me with weight training. I stopped for a little while but missed it alot, as like you i had a good figure and was very toned and could see the difference in myself by not going, but when i did go back on my own i loved it and it's amazing how many people you get to know when your there. Just remember how good you feel about yourself when you come out of the gym after a session, that is a good motivation to have. What have you got to lose, go tomorrow, you'll be glad you did.

Ask one of your friends that doesn't work out much if they would like to join you in playing tennis each day. Me and my sister do it all the time. I find it is the most fun if you listen to music, and if you don't keep score. We don't even play tennis with the rules or proper form, we just see how long we can keep it going without it going over a wall or something. And even if it does go over a wall, you get more exercise by having to run and go get it. It's really fun, and you spend time with your friend. Have fun!

By the way, this can really be done with any sport, but I find tennis the best, because it is fast-moving and requires only two people.

Just do it!
Once you start and get into the habit again you'll wonder how you ever done without it.

Stand naked in front of the mirror and ask yourself if you're happy with what you see. If the answer's no, then what can you do to change it? Go to the gym? See that was easy.............

Make time for yourself - me time - and no-one and nothing comes between you and me time.

Do it for yourself and no-one else.

GO TO THE GYM NOW!

... and in six weeks when you stand in front of that mirror again you'll like what you see.

Look at pictures in magazines of the skinny stars...that is one thing that motivates me to get going to the gym. Once you get going, you wont stop. Trust me. Even if you just go 1 or 2 days a week..Think about how good you'll look for your husband.

No do not circulate lower back to tighty whities because of the fact they are going to in the beginning make your "kit" small and make you appear to be a nerd/geek/momma's boy. real tale any guy that's changing and the different men see he's donning tighty whities gets made relaxing of in spite of age. persist with boxers. Hanes dude Hanes.

Do you have another friend who would like to go with you?

it can be awkward if you have not been for some time to start up again.

why not aim for just one or two days a week and see how it goes. you may need to 'diary' it.

good luck

you have pointed out the positives yourself. don't look at what you used to do. set yourself up to go 2-3 times a week. get into the habit first. good luck and enjoy.

It's really hard. Did you know over £20million is wasted on unused gym memberships in the UK every year.

It's more motivating to go with someone else.
