You don't get pneumonia from being cold - you get it from an infective agent. Pneumonia can be caused by either a virus or bacteria.

Pneumonia is caused by 3 things. 1) mold. This type of PNX (the code letters for pneumonia) is the worst but is also very rare. 2) bacteria, treated with antibiotics. I had this type. 3) viral, which is the best form to have since it passes easily.

Here's the skinny on PNX, though. You friend is exposed to a cold virus. His body is fighting the virus nicely by making his nose get all blocked up, sneezing, etc. His body is kicking out white blood cells well, fighting successfully, when all of a sudden he gets a secondary infection from 1 of the 3 pneumonia beginnings (mold, virus, bacteria) and he develops PNX. The illness was not caused by the cold; instead, the cold made his body weak enough to be susceptible to an infection from a "germ" that he is exposed to every day (and normally fights off every day).

He needs to see a doctor, who may treat him with antibiotics first to see if they work, without doing a culture, kind of renegade medicine. If it doesn't work, nothing will work for the virus and the mold needs to be confirmed before you start attacking it, so a culture (painful procedure) is taken. If he has a virus, he should be feeling better by now, since viruses tend to be shortlived once we start living right by sleeping well, drinking fluids, etc. If he has the mold type, he's probably in the hospital on oxygen already, fighting for his life. If he has bacterial, he's into his antibiotics treatment and should start feeling fine soon, unless the PNX is resistant to that antibiotic (mine was).

Recovery takes a while and varies per the individual. I wish him good luck!

Pneumonia can be deadly. You friend needs to take Goldenseal Root. Not leaves but root specifically. Most doctors will tell you that the body must fight viral infections but those are the ones that have not studies herbs. Goldenseal is an anti inflammatory, anti bacterial, anti viral herb. It can literally save your life. I would take 3 tablets, every 12 hours for one week, in combination with acidophilus or yogurt because it kill bacteria so well that it will diminish the good bacteria in your intestines. I wouldn't normally be so specific and you can have these statements verified by other sources before proceeding. Too many people have died from Pneumonia because they didn't know any better. Please read up on Goldenseal immediately.

You mean pneumonia and it can be viral or bacterial. Quite often it can be mistaken for a cold in the early stages.
