I was wondering if dog treats got rotten?

Depends on the treat. One of mine reads "6 - 8 weeks", one reads "4 months", the other reads "2 year shelf life without refrigeration".

Surely the whole point of making your own cakes, meals etc. is to avoid things like preservatives. Presumably a light sponge cake will last only a few days if kept in an airtight tin, wheras a rich fruit cake will last a lot longer. A christmas pudding (OK so it's not a cake) should be cooked one Christmas and eaten the next. The preservative is the sugar, isn't it? Most commercial foods which have so called preservatives don't last that long at all. In fact I had a jar of jam the other day (from Waitrose!) that had developed mould after being opened for a few days. Jam is, as you know, the traditional way of preserving fruit, by boiling and adding sugar.

Yes they do spoil. If soft treats are left in the open they will harden. Like human foods there are expiration dates written somewhere on the package (top, side, bottom).

For example one of my dog's treats expire June 12, 2008, which is written at the bottom of the package. So be sure to check the package. Good Luck.

Off-shelf life is lucky to be 2 seconds, in my household.

Regular treats like milk-bones - I'd say relatively indefinitely. Dogs aren't too picky, and the food is dry cereal-based food. Unless it's infested with bugs, you can probably use them years after buying them.

I all depends on the type of treat. Look on the packet or if you don't have a packet then take one to your local pet store and ask them but best not to give your dog any if your not sure if they are any good...

They might go bad if they are moist treats. I would imagine that dry treats just go stale. Considering that dogs readily eat garbage and kitty litter "fritters," I wouldn't worry too much about giving them stale treats. I mean, if there's obvious mold, then just chuck 'em in the garbage.

i odnt think you should keep it or use it for your dog to eat . you should go grab a new one that taste or smell fresh. if something so old and hadnt used or ate for over months or years thats need to throw away in the trash . or youre dog can get sick .

does it really matter? after all, you can give a dog food that's been in the fridge for over a week and it doesn't kill them.
