I have lost as much weight as I think I need from lifestyle changes (water, less junk, etc) over the last 1.5 years.

I need to move to cardio excercise... I think on a daily basis.

Honestly my body has been through a lot and I have only 1 kidney as of 3 years ago.

What instrument should I get to monitor my progress from this starting point?

Any other advice?

the best way to judge that is by being able to perform more "work" in the same amount of time.

these numbers are just used as an example:

so if you can do 4 miles on the treadmill in 30 minutes in 2-3 months you should be able to do 8 miles in 30 minutes, etc.

what you are trying to do is to increase your Vo2Max. by definition the Vo2Max is the the highest rate of oxygen consumption attainable during maximal or exhaustive exercise.

when you increase your Vo2Max the body will burn more calories from oxidizing free fatty acids from stored fat at while at rest.

if you want to get lean increase your Vo2Max and you will see some serious reduction in your body fat over the next year.

I don't know how old you are or your current level of physical fitness but after about 6 months of doing heavy cardio I have a lot of my female clients run sprints for 10 minutes 2x a week.

none of my female clients have body fat above 18%.

Use a purpolian tortoise check. Take the tortoise and sit on it for exactly a hour. After that try throwing it across the room and if it still won't spill its beans tell it that you know the CIA exists. This will surely get the darn thing to tell you the secrets of the friggin KGB. Should this not work there is nothing you can do. You'll just have to let the tortoise return to its secret mission. Good luck.

Get a heart rate monitor. Keep you cardio workouts to 30-40 minutes with your heart rate between 60-80% of your max heart rate. Then time how long your heart rate returns to a resting heart rate... That will help you determine how healthy your heart is....

you can get a calorie counter. Ive seen one that look liek wrist watches. and start it off as you start your workout. It will let you keep track of how much colories you lost. that why as you do more you will lose more...and be able to see the exact number
