As long as all parties are respectful it is enlightening and can close gaps between people. Whether or not you believe what people are saying, by understanding their religion, from their viewpoint, you are better able to understand the indivdual. We should all have respect for all religions and all backgrounds, and understanding people is a great source of respect. Once hate or anger enters into the equation no one gets anywhere, but the divide between humanity widens.

When it is done in such a way, although next to impossible that isn't meant to harm, ridicule, belittle.. but only in such a way to open one's eyes because you love them and care about their salvation... the point is, well their Salvation. Sadly, it seems some people enjoy poking fun. Not sure if it's to help the other see, which is hardly the case or an attempt to make themselves look better. In the end, someone is either enlightened (lifted up) or hurt.

Does everything we do have to have a point?

What's the point of looking out over a hundred foot drop with only a narrow plastic channel and some water to keep you from terminal friction burn... and going down it? Fun? Can fun be the point of it?

If so, then I debate religion because it's fun. There's no other point to it for me. :)

If not, then there's no point in being alive anyways... fun's the best point of all!

That's the best question I've ever seen on here. There IS no point in debating. All we should do is to ask questions and share our experience. From there, all we can do is to let each one decide how to live and know God.

Keeps you sharp. And although in a forum such as this it is difficult to pin down the religious squirming, in real life it doesn't take all that much before they either give up or invoke 'Faith' and end the discussion.

Education is the only way were going to rid the world of religious superstition, or at least minimalize it. Debating those with religious superstitious beliefs is a good way of highlighting how pointless and baseless they are.

Gives you the opportunity to decide for yourself, through analytical thinking, which religion, if any makes any sense to you.

When people discuss their beliefs in an intelligent well thought out manner it is very interesting. It is to bad there are so many trolls that post stupid things.
