My mother had polio as a child and now has many symptoms of PPS. My sister and I are both having some similar symptoms though not as pronounced as Mother's. Does this syndrome affect the offspring of PPS sufferers?

PPS, as far as I know, is caused by the weakness of new cells which have grown as replacements for those affected and killed by polio. If no polio virus has infected the body, no PPS should neither be detected. If there are some sub-acute poliomyelitis disease which do not have a detectable manifestation I cannot say.

It would certainly be better to contact a doctor or a virology to be sure about this issue, however!

The original attack of polio destroyed muscle and nerve fibers. Over the years, she has been over-working the remaining nerves and muscles ... they are now starting to degenerate from the overuse. There's not much you can do to "fix" it, but lifestyle changes can minimize how fast it develops. If it's just showing up now - at 60 - she can probably change a few things and do OK for decades. She may have to rest more, change some habits, hire some helpers for some things.

It shouldn't, but I could be wrong. Have you and your sister gone in for check-ups?

Good luck!
