Pick really popular books that everyone loves and has already read: If you are a girl read Twilight and New Moon, excellent books and they have enough substance to have a easy conversation.
For a guy or girl read Eragon, and Eldest by Christopher Paolini.
Harry Potter is for everyone, hmm what else, quite a bit of people read Pride and Prejudice- which was very good... Oh I forgot The Da Vinci Code book and movie rocked, Try Angels and Demons by Dan Brown (I think that was the author), which was good too
But I really think if you want you should stick to very mainstream books and check Amazon.com for new books and best sellers.
