Assuming you live in England, Amsterdam is easily accessible by rail and by coach/ferry.
A rail journey between London and Amsterdam takes approximately five to six hours via Brussels. You have to take the Eurostar from London Waterloo to Bruxelles-Midi, then change to the InterCity service between Bruxelles-Midi and Amsterdam Centraal.
There are also three direct services per day to Amsterdam by coach from London Victoria. The journey time is twelve hours and thirty minutes.

One way is the Eurostar to Brussels, and then a connecting train to Amsterdam. Or you could get a ferry to Le Hague and then drive up or take a train from there.
The cheapest and quickest way is flying, I'm afraid.
You need to try and conquer your fear. Go with someone you trust and who is confident in flying. The flight to Amsterdam is only about 40 minutes, so is a good first flight.

Assuming you are going from the UK - get to Sheerness and take the ferry to Vlissengen. Then a train journey to Amsterdam. This is a long journey however.

I'm terrified of flying also but have flown to Thailand and India 4 times in the last year as i had to for work. I still don't like it but it gets easier and you have to face your fears head on if you want to travel my friend

It's all right to be scared of flying.

Here are some things to do to occupy your self if you fly:

1) Most planes have TV's (on long term flights), occupy yourself by focusing on the television

2) You could sit by the window while the plane takes off and distract yourself by looking down at the ground. It actually helps in a way to see how beautiful and wonderous everything looks from above.

3) Or you could sit away from the window

4) If your afraid of someone Hi-Jacking the plane (Lots of people are) just remind yourself, if you see the fasten seat belt sign go on in some times and off, the pilot's still there. If the cabin crew is acting perfectly normal, pilot's still there. If you hear the pilot's voice on the intercom/speaker, pilot's still there!

5) Close your eyes and think of something pleasant when you get scared, and grab on to the arm chairs beside and you squeeze and squeal until you get it out of your system.

6) Or you could squeeze on to something and think of something completely unrelated to the plane

7) Take your favorite novel/book onto the plane and get into it - You'll find that you'll be so deep into the book you won't notice anything around you.

8) Start a conversation with someone around you.

9) Sleep! You could sleep throughout the entire flight without being aware that your even on a plane.

10) You could ask one of the cabin crew members on advice on what to do if your still scared, they'll be more then happy to help you.

11) If your a certain religon, you can recite some verses/stories from your Holy Book and eventually relax thinking that God is with you.

12) Bring an electronic on the plane (JUST DON'T PLAY IT DURING TAKE OFF AND LANDING - It messes with the plane's flight control) to play with.

13) This may sound silly, but, bring clay/play-do on the plane and squish it around and make something! It's actually quite effective, it relieves stress and distracts you.

14) Listen to music, bring an I-Pod or MP3 player - If you don't have any portable music devices, don't worry! The plane has its own radio! Just ask for head phones and plop 'em in the plug and listen to around fifteen channels of diffrent kinds of music!

Good luck! If you need any more help or advice just Yahoo me at Pastismylove@hotmail.com

I go on planes at least six times a year! I'd be more then happy to help you.

And if I think of anything else I promise to keep on adding more suggestions.

A Doctor can prescribe short term medication to mellow you out for the flight. YOu should have someone with you when you go to the airport, and someone to meet you at your destination. You might also get a letter from your doctor stating what meds you are taking and why, in case you arouse suspicion with flight or boarding crews. Let the airline know of your anxiety and they will look after you!!
It's a very common problem, and a very simple fix
Good luck

If you are in Europe drive, take a train, or boat. In the U.S., you should ask your doctor about maybe getting some meds for flight or carry cash with ya to drink some wine and then sleep the entire time. I hate flying but I have too.. I pretty much deal with it on my own.

I assume from the UK? Take the Eurotunnel to Paris from London, then take the train to Amsterdam.

Only you'll be all day - what's half an hour of sheer abject terror compared to a whole day of slog slog slog ... ah well, your choice.
